National Youth Brass Band of New Zealand

2019 National Youth Brass Band - application information

Brass and percussion players under the age of 23 years on the 31st of January 2019 are invited to apply to be a member of the 2019 National Youth Brass Band. Applicants must be a registered member of a band affiliated with BBANZ. All members of NYBB 2018 are eligible to apply, regardless of the age requirement. The Musical Director is David Bremner, Wellington, and the Band Manager is Mike Ford, Nelson.

Interested players are requested to fill in the application form and return it along with a recorded audition to BBANZ Office no later than Friday 23 March 2018. A letter of recommendation from your current musical director should be emailed to BBANZ, also by this date. If you will also be applying for the NSSBB, you may use the same audition. There is a tick box on the application form to indicate to us that you would like the NYBB audition used for NSSBB.

Course information: The 2019 National Youth Brass Band will be travelling to Brisbane, Australia, after a short but intense rehearsal period, commencing on Friday 18 January 2019. This will most probably be in Auckland or Hamilton, with a concert in Hamilton on Sunday, 20 January 2019. The plan is to fly to Brisbane on Monday 21 January and return to New Zealand on Monday 28 January.

Course Costs: The course has been costed out at $2300 per person. This is what it would cost if there is no fundraising. However, significant fundraising activities, which will require your support, are being planned with the objective of reducing the cost. Members will also be responsible for getting to Auckland on the Friday morning, and home from either Auckland, Wellington or Christchurch after the tour. The main reason for selecting the band so early is to allow fundraising to take place, and to allow playing members the opportunity to start saving some pennies. The final cost per player will be dependent on how successful the fundraising activities are.

Audition requirements:

Brass players – please submit a video recording of a slow melody and a technical piece of your own choice which you feel best demonstrates your musicianship and technique.

Percussion players – please submit a video recording of three pieces of your own choice, one on Drum kit/Snare Drum, one on tuned percussion and one on Timpani.

Auditions must not be accompanied, and must have been recorded no earlier than 1st January 2018. Audition Requirements this year are the same as for the NSSBB, and the same audition may be used for both.

Technical requirements and submitting your audition

Please record with a decent recording device, as using an iPhone or similar may hide the true qualities of your playing. We would prefer these to be uploaded to Google Drive. Upload your video to a folder (especially if it is multiple files) and share that folder, or upload to the public folder and share that link with nybb2019@gmail.com. If you need help with this process, please email Helen at bbanzeo@gmail.com

Alternatively you can post a Data DVD/CD (not a movie disc) or USB stick with your application.

We recommend you do not email your audition as the quality of the recording is significantly reduced when sent via email, and may not show your performance at its best.

Audition recordings must be in either.avi or .mp4 formats, no other format is acceptable.

The application form is to be completed in full and, if not a member of the 2018 NYBB, be accompanied by a letter of recommendation from the musical director of your current band. Please have this emailed to bbanzeo@gmail.com  It must be received by Friday 23 March 2018.
