Jack Bewley grew up in Whakatane playing with Eastern Bay of Plenty Brass and his interest in composition developed in high school. He’s had several quartets and ensemble compositions performed by EBOP Brass and his first brass band work, Te Tangi a Wairaka, was performed at the 2015 Band of the Year contest. It has since been performed by the National Secondary Schools’ Band and Wellington Brass and helped earn Jack the top scholar title for NCEA Scholarship Music in 2015. Jack was also commissioned to write the Open Bass Trombone solo for the 2017 NZ National Contest and the C Grade Test for the 2018 NZ National Contest. He is currently studying for a Bachelor of Music in Composition at the NZ School of Music in Wellington, under renowned NZ composers such as Michael Norris, John Psathas and Ken Young, after which he hopes to continue studies overseas, venturing into film music in the future.
