Short Bio

Luke began playing the trombone at the age of 12, following three generations of trombone players and five generations of brass band musicians. He went on to study performance trombone at the University of Auckland with Doug Cross, graduating with a BMus in 2007. The following year, Luke completed his Honours-level qualifications at the New Zealand School of Music in Wellington under David Bremner then returned to Auckland in 2009 to undertake Masters-level study, graduating with an MMus (Hons) in 2010. During his studies, Luke freelanced with the NZSO, APO, CSO and Orchestra Wellington, along with other regional ensembles throughout New Zealand. He was 5-time principal trombone of the National Youth Orchestra and toured twice with the National Youth band as principal. He has also been a member of two National Bands and has performed concerti with all of Auckland’s amateur orchestras. He has successfully directed Howick Brass through 2 national contests, being placed both times, as well as success at regional contests. In conjunction with the band he commissioned 3 new works for brass band whilst MD.
